What Can LASIK Correct?
LASIK vision correction is a refractive surgical procedure that can improve vision conditions such as nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism – even reducing or eliminating your need for glasses or contact lenses. You will have one of these refractive errors if your cornea (the outside of your eye) is not ideally shaped.
For Example:
- Nearsightedness (myopia) means your eye may be longer than a normal eye and your cornea may be steeper. When light passes through your cornea and lens, it focuses in front of your retina (the back of your eye) so distant images appear blurry.
- Farsightedness (hyperopia) means your eye may be shorter than a normal eye and your cornea may be flatter. When light passes through your cornea and lens, it focuses behind your retina so near images appear blurry.
- Astigmatism is the steepening of the cornea or lens which causes images at all distances to appear blurry. You can have astigmatism along with nearsightedness and farsightedness.
What Are The Steps of LASIK?
Prior to any LASIK procedure, our team takes precise measurements of the individual curvature of your cornea and microscopic nuances of your eye anatomy. We use Wavescan 3D mapping to create a blueprint of your eye. This is used to guide your treatment to produce the best vision results. Although your vision may be blurry at first, results are almost immediate. Most patients are generally able to see clearly in just a few hours.
Step 1
Anesthetic eye drops are administered to numb your eyes. A lid speculum is used to keep your eyes open.
Step 2
Your doctor creates a thin corneal flap using a laser to allow access to the underlying corneal tissue. We have invested in iFS® femtosecond laser technology for this step.
Step 3
A laser is used to reshape your cornea according to your unique refractive error. Only minuscule amounts of corneal tissue need to be removed in most cases.
Step 4
When the procedure is finished, the flap is positioned back in place where it will heal quickly without the need for stitches.
