Lifestyle Lenses
Lifestyle Lenses

Intraocular lenses (IOLS) are lens implants that are placed in the eye after the eye’s natural crystalline lens is removed because of a cataract. Multifocal lens implants allow cataract patients to see clearly at a distance, as well as up close, giving them the freedom of better vision without the need for glasses.

There are several types of multifocal IOL lenses available at the Eye Center of Northern Colorado including ReSTOR and Tecnis. ReSTOR has different ring-shaped zones so that patients are able to see objects clearly both far and near. Multifocal IOL’s offer a better alternative for many people who are frustrated by their dependence on reading glasses.

Another option in the Eye Center's multifocal IOL portfolio is Crystalens. Crystalens is the first and only FDA approved accommodating introcular lens. Crystalens was modeled after the human eye. Like the eye's natural lens, it uses the eye muscle to flex and accommodate back and forth as you constantly change focus on images at all distances around you.

The old stigma of being diagnosed with cataracts has been transformed through technology into some pretty exciting choices!
Now you can choose the IntraOcular lens (IOL) the best fits your lifestyle….
Multifocal (Premium) IOL:
Although most people over the age of 60 experience some level of blurry vision due to cataracts, and almost everyone over 50 loses their ability to read comfortably without glasses due to prebyopia, multifocal IOLs now make it possible to regain performance more like that of younger eyes. The multifocal IOL is a lens that keeps up with your active lifestyle; nearly 9 out of 10 patients enjoy freedom from glasses
A lens with multiple focal points, designed to replace the natural lens affected by the cataract and correct presbyopia (the ability to focus up close) in order to provide a full range of vision; near, far and in between. The multi focal lens design also offers enhance image quality.
If you are diagnosed with cataracts and are experiencing one or more of the following symptoms, you may be a candidate for the Multifocal IOL:
·         Difficulty reading
·         Difficulty seeing close objects
·         Difficulty seeing to drive, especially at night
·         Changing glasses prescriptions
·         Needing bifocals
Pros
·         Excellent vision at all vision ranges
·         Reduce or eliminate need for glasses
Cons
·         May experience halos around lights at night
·         May experience difficulty on low lighting situations such as night driving
Monofocal (traditional) IOL:
·         A lens with a single focal point designed to provide clear distance vision. This means you will be able to see objects far away and will most likely need glasses for reading and any type of close detailed work.
What if I have astigmatism?
Astigmatism is a condition in which the cornea is warped such that light rays entering the eye cannot focus on one spot of the retina. This results in distorted, blurry or even double vision. There are several ways to correct this.
Correcting astigmatism is considered an elective procedure by Medicare/private insurance as there is no disease or emergency condition that requires it to be corrected. When correction is elected, astigmatism reduction represents a goal rather than a guarantee; there is always a slight risk of over/under correction.
The following are means of correcting astigmatism in conjunction with cataract removal/ IOL implantation (all require some out-of-pocket expense to the patient):
Astigmatism-Correcting (Toric) Monofocal Lens:
A lens with a single focal point, designed to replace the natural lens affected by the cataract as well as pre-existing astigmatism. This lens design provides distance vision and enhanced image quality.
LASIK
This is a corneal procedure that can be performed following cataract surgery. LASIK is used in cases where astigmatism may be more irregular; not every patient would be a candidate.
Limbal Relaxing Incision (LRI):
This is a procedure where the surgeon makes a small incision in the cornea at the time of the cataract surgery; helping the cornea becomes more spherical in shape. The LRI works well with mold to moderate amounts of astigmatism. The risks of this procedure are the same as those associated with cataract surgery, and no additional medications or postoperative care is needed beyond what is normally required with cataract surgery.
 Prescription Glasses
Corrective eyeglass or contact lens can be worn following cataract surgery to correct excess astigmatism to allow for best corrected vision.
Medicare or private insurance commonly cover the cost of cataract surgery and a standard (monofocal) lens design. Out of pocket fees apply to all upgraded lens designs and secondary surgical procedures: Multifocal, Toric, LRI, LASIK
While there is an out of pocket fee (above and beyond Medicare/private insurance coverage) for Premium IOL s, Toric IOLs and surgical alternatives (LRI/LASIK) for correcting pre-existing astigmatism, they offer significant visual benefits over traditional IOLs.

near. If you suffer from presbyopia, like many people over the age of 50, you could benefit from the  multifocal lenses, because they can provide you with the ability to see both near and far clearer than before. With five separate visual zones, designed to work with varying light conditions, multifocal lenses gives people the ability to see at far, near, and intermediate distances.

The Tecnis lens is a great fit for cataract surgery patients that have difficulty reading, or seeing objects up close, and who wear bifocals. The Tecnis lens accommodates all distances, ranging from near to far, at all light levels, reducing the occurrence of poor night vision. Tecnis also reduces the appearance of halos, or glares, side effects that are common with other post-cataract surgery multifocal lens implants.

ReStor IOL

ReStor® IOL

A person loses the ability to see far and near when the lens loses the flexibility needed to change focus from far to near. This condition in which the lens loses its ability to focus is called presbyopia. The AcrySof ReStor® lens is an advanced technology lens which may allow patients to see from near to far without glasses. ReStor® intraocular lenses give the freedom to reduce and even eliminate the need for glasses to read a menu, work on the computer, watch television, and see far distances.
