Cataract surgery is currently one of the most commonly performed medical procedures, with over three million surgeries completed in the United States each year. Cataracts are so common that 50% of people over the age of 60 develop them; it is believed that everyone will develop a cataract if they live long enough. Many people will suffer for cataracts for years but be completely unaware that their vision is slowly clouding. Most people notice that colors are becoming duller over time. As the cataracts continue to develop a person’s ability to do certain things like reading a paper, drive (especially at night), and their ability to read road signs are affected.
With the technology advancements in surgical techniques, cataract surgery is now an outpatient procedure, and with various vision correction options available after cataract surgery, it is now faster and safer to receive better sight through this procedure.
A cataract is the gradual clouding of the eyes natural crystalline lens. This lens is what helps focus light rays on the retina. After the clouding begins, it is impossible to return the lens to its original clear state with medications and cataract surgery is necessary. Various factors can increase the development of cataracts, including UV radiation and cigarette smoking, but anyone who gets old enough will sooner or later develop a cataract.
During cataract surgery a small incision is made in the cornea, where a small ultrasonic device is inserted. The lens capsule, which is the front part of the lens envelope, is opened so that the lens material can be removed. The small ultrasonic device inserted into the eye is used to pulverize the hardened yellow proteins that cause the cataract, while the material is simultaneously vacuumed from the eye. Then the intraocular lens, that was chosen based on your individual vision needs, is inserted into the eye. This lens will remain inside this location, allowing light to be clearly focused on the retina. It will not move, and it can’t be felt or sensed in any way by the patient. Once the new lens is in place, where your natural lens used to exist, the opening will self-seal, without the need for stitches.
Recovery from cataract surgery is generally quick, with most people achieving better vision within the first 24 hours. Patients will have to administer eye medicated eye drops for the first few weeks after surgery.
